Immigration: Fact and Fiction

  • The "lines" for family and employment immigration are often very long. Only a certain number of people from each country are allowed to come into the United States every year, and only the government knows how long individuals may have to wait.
  • The wait for a visa can be as long as 25 years.
  • If you enter the country illegally (even as a young child) and you marry a U.S. citizen, you must first leave the country for ten years before you can obtain legal status.
  • If you are undocumented and you have citizen children, you can still be deported.
  • Even if you have lived in the United States for many years, you have never broken the law, you have always paid your taxes, and your entire family lives here, unless you qualify for specific exceptions you will never qualify for legal immigration status.
