The Promotora Program

What We Do:

Holy Cross has bilingual, bi-cultural outreach workers—known as Promotoras—stationed at low-income clinics and parishes throughout Northern Utah. They teach weekly classes on prenatal health, violence prevention, diet and nutrition, smoking and alcohol abuse, and other health topics to hundreds of mothers every year. They help families access community resources, find insurance for their children, refer them to doctors, and answer questions. Promotoras also visit people in their homes to ensure that families with critical needs get help and support.

Why We Do It:

Women who are Latina, low-income, and young face critical risk factors in the health of their children. Many are unfamiliar with local health care and food options, and many fear discrimination. We believe that all children deserve to start life healthy, so we focus on giving moms the tools they need to be effective, caring parents of healthy, happy kids.
